The Southeast District Teen Retreat is going to be held in New Bern, NC this year during March 8-9! Teen Retreat is an exciting two-day leadership/team-building event that is for 4-H teens only! The event is planned by teens for teens and is always a fun experience! There will be workshops, social-time, activities to participate in, spirit stick competition, entertainment, district officer elections, and MORE! The registration cost is $65 which includes lodging, food, materials, and an event t-shirt! Transportation is provided to and from the event!

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Youth and adults interested in learning how to excel as competitors and coaches in competitive 4-H, FFA and inter-collegiate horse judging contests are invited to attend the 3.5 hour training session. Topics will include organizing and delivering oral reasons, formulating a judging system and effective use of terminology. The training session will use a variety of video horse judging classes as a model for training on class placing and oral reason training. An afternoon session for all individuals interested in expanding their knowledge for the Horse Bowl and Hippology contests will occur following the lunch break.

Show season is quickly approaching and there is no better animal to start with than a turkey! Come join us on February 4, 2013 from 6:00-7:30pm in the Ag. Building Auditorium to learn more about the Youth Market Turkey Program that NC State University and 4-H has to offer! Interested youth and parents will learn about the program and what all is involved with raising and showing a turkey for the NC State Fair! Abby Dilley, Livestock Agent for Pender and Onslow Counties will be there discussing general poultry husbandry such as nutrition, care, housing, anatomy, and more! An experienced 4-H show family will also be there to demonstrate showmanship on their turkey and answer questions! Registration deadline is January 28th!
Remember, if you can take care of a dog or cat you can raise and show a turkey!
Pender County 4-H will be conducting a winter training series focusing on project record books and presentations/public speaking. This will be a hands-on trainings with materials provided! Please make plans now to attend one or both trainings being offered! Both training sessions will be held from 6:00pm-7:30pm in the Ag. Building Auditorium located at 801 S. Walker St. Burgaw, NC.

Pender County 4-H has just recently added a new special interest 4-H club that focuses on horses! You do not have to own a horse to be part of this club, just an interest in horses! Youth will be engaged in learning activities focused around horse husbandry such as nutrition, care, grooming, breeds, and more! Youth will be able to participate in various competitions that the 4-H horse program has to offer such as horse judging, horse bowl, hippology, essay writing, photography, and more!
There will be an interest meeting held on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at 5:30pm. The meeting will be located at the Burgaw Library and is open to all youth who have an interest in horses!

Want to become involved in showing animals or competing with your knowledge of animals? If so, rabbits are a great place to start! There are a lot of youth in 4-H that are involved in showing rabbits, rabbit projects, and rabbit skillathon!
You too, can join the bunny frenzy and start learning more about rabbits! A great way to get started is by going to a rabbit competition! Sampson County Cooperative Extension and 4-H is hosting a rabbit competition on February 16, 2013 from 9:00am- 2:00pm at the Sampson County Livestock Facility in Clinton, NC. All counties have been invited to participate!
There will be three age categories: 5-8 Cloverbuds, 9-13 Junior, and 14-18 Senior. The competition is broken down into four divisions: breed identification, anatomy, judging, and showmanship. All participants will receive a ribbon! No experience is necessary, you can come to learn! The Southeast District 4-H Council will hold their winter meeting on Monday, January 21, 2013! This date is a holiday, so most youth should be out of school. The Winterfest Winter Meeting will be held at the Wayne County Extension Office from 11:00am-3:00pm. The registration fee will be $7 per person. (Limited county scholarships are available to cover this fee- please see Lauren Langley, 4-H Agent to request a scholarship form)
This is a teen leadership event open to youth ages 13-18 as of January 1. The district officers have planned a fun event with workshops on team building and cooking with a concluding activity where participants will have something to take home. Transportation will be provided to and from the event. Space is limited, so reserve your spot today! Registration deadline is January 11, 2013!
