Barking Buddies 4-H Club decided to create a fun scavenger hunt for 4-H members to do with their dogs! This exercise helped socialize the 4-H member’s dog as they encountered new situations! The scavenger hunt took the 4-H members and their dogs to three locations: Hudson’s Hardware in Castle Hayne, Hugh McRae Park, and the beach! Part of the hunt was to have your photo taken with your dog in those three places so that you could share with the rest of the club members!
In addition to all the fun traveling with your dog, there were several engaging questions following the scavenger hunt for 4-H members to think about and respond to. Some of the questions were:
- Were you nervous taking your dog to any of these outings? Why?
- How did your dog react to people it did not know?
- Did anyone pet your dog?
- Was your dog hard to handle? Why?
- Did you have fun?
Here are some of the photos that were taken on the scavenger hunt:

It’s time to start decorating for the holidays, and what better way to do so than by purchasing a wreath to support Pender County 4-H! These wreaths come from Pardue Tree Farm and Nursery in Sparta, NC. They are a three generation family-owned farm and have been in the evergreen business for over 25 years. They harvest by hand the Fraser Fir and Boxwood boughs to make their wreaths.
- All proceeds from this fundraiser will benefit the 4-Hers of Pender County 4-H!
- The outside diameter of the completed wreath is approximately 20-24 inches!
- Payment is required at time of order!
- Order deadline: November 16, 2012!
- Wreaths will be ready for pick-up on November 29 from 8:00am-5:00pm at the Agriculture Building (801 S. Walker St. Burgaw).

The CFFE 4-H Goat Show has been postponed from October 27, 2012 until the following Saturday, November 3, 2012 due to the hurricane that is threatening high winds and rain. The show will still be held at the Cape Fear Fair & Expo at the same time, etc. Only thing that will change is the date.
All of the registered show participants have been notified. Once all of the confirmations come in on whether or not the registered participants can still attend the goat show on the new date will determine how many youth from the waiting list will be let in the show.
We are looking forward to seeing everyone on our new date of November 3, 2012!

Buddies 4-H Club Members learned how to give a demonstration during their club meeting held on October 17, 2012! The 4-H members got into two groups and worked on writing out the steps to how to make a peanut butter sandwich and how to wash a dog. Those are both examples of demonstrations that they can do to teach others. The club also collected saltine crackers as part of their community service project to donate to the Pender County Christian Services, which is a local food bank.
The newly chartered Barking Buddies 4-H Club met for the second time on October 16, 2012! There were 13 youth present for the meeting along with 6 parents. The club held a short business meeting discussing the upcoming events such as the Cape Fear Fair & Expo, Happy Tails Dog Expo, and more! Several educational videos about 4-H and dogs were shown to the 4-H members to give them ideas of what they can do with their dog in 4-H!
After the videos were shown, 4-H’ers were given the chance to become volunteers for different roles in a skit. The skit was about parliamentary procedure. By participating in the skit, youth learned the different officer roles and how to properly conduct business by using parliamentary procedure.

To conclude the meeting, 4-H’ers played a fun ice breaker game where they learned more about each other such as favorite food, color, etc! They also enjoyed a Fall themed snack of apples and dipped them in caramel and sprinkles!

The Youth Market Turkey Show was held on Friday, October 12, 2012 at the NC State Fair. Pender County 4-H had two youth participants in the show. The Youth Market Turkey Show program begins right as school lets out in June when youth travel to Raleigh to pick up their turkey poults. They spend the next 5 months raising their turkeys to bring their best turkey to the turkey show held at the State Fair each year in October. This year there were 14 classes resulting in a total of 182 youth participants and turkeys.
