ATTENTION: 4-H members, volunteers, & parents                                       There will be a work day on Tuesday, May 29th from 5:00pm-6:00pm in the agriculture building auditorium.  Youth will be able to learn how to face paint and practice during this work day.  We will also be making new posters to be used at the festival.  The volunteer sign-up sheet will also be available to sign-up for shifts to work the blueberry festival.

3rd Grade Students Plant School Garden!

This year was a pilot testing year for our 4-H curriculum, Soil Solutions.  It was piloted at Cape Fear Elementary School (2 classrooms) and Malpass Corner Elementary School (2 classrooms).  Soil Solutions is developed for 3rd grade and aligns with the standard course of study.  Students learn about soil properties, soil and water relationships, soil and plant growth, seed germination, pollination, and composting.

The 3rd grade students at Malpass Corner Elementary School planted their very own garden while learning from the 4-H curriculum, Soil Solutions!  They grew tomato and corn plants from a seed, and were donated some cabbage plants ready to go in the soil!  Here are some photos of the school garden  back in late April!

Saying Goodbye to 4-H International Exchange Student

May 16, 2012 marked the end of a 9 month exchange through the FLEX (Future Leaders Exchange) and States’ 4-H International Exchange Program.  The Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) Program gives students (ages 15-17) the chance to live with a host family and attend a U.S. high school for a year.

Our exchange student, Anastasiya came to us from Ukraine on August 11, 2011 to live with a 4-H host family in Burgaw, NC.  What seemed like a long time, flew by quickly!  Anastasiya learned all about 4-H, Pender County, North Carolina, and the United States through her exchange.  She completed over 100 hours of volunteer work and participated in several 4-H teen leadership events.  She gained a lot of valuable experience during the exchange and was really sad to leave!  Anastasiya is the 2nd exchange student that Pender County 4-H has hosted, we also had a Japanese exchange student for 30 days during the summer of 2011.

All Bugged Out! *2nd Grade Science Day*

Today, 4-H Agent, Lauren Langley visited with Malpass Corner Elementary School’s 2nd grade classrooms for Science Day!  The lesson taught is from the 4-H curriculum for 2nd Grade titled, “Bug Out.”  Each lesson was an hour long and there were a total of 3 classrooms.  Students learned about insect characteristics, simple metamorphosis, and complete metamorphosis.  The photo below displays the life cycle of a butterfly, which is complete metamorphosis (4 stage life cycle).

Students were then able to make a life cycle wheel based off of the meal moth, which is complete metamorphosis, like the butterfly.  The wheel displays each stage: eggs, larva, pupa, and adult.  The students were able to express their artistic side by drawing the different stages!  Below are some photos of the completed life cycle wheels that the students made today!  Enjoy!

I can tell you one thing- Malpass Corner Elementary School’s 2nd grade students LOVE science and they LOVE 4-H!!!!
