4-H Citizenship NC Focus

4-H Citizenship NC Focus is a unique leadership opportunity for 4-H youth ages 14-18 in downtown Raleigh, NC on June 11-13.  Hands-on workshops, panel discussions, distinguished speakers, and open discussion will help youth discover how government impacts everyday life, and how they can impact government in return.  Youth will learn about state government, working with public officials, hear from prominent NC officials, and visit legislatures.  This event would cost over $500 per youth, however the NC Electric Cooperatives help offset the cost down to $150 per youth.  That registration fee covers everything for the 3 days.  Transportation and supervision is provided to and from the event as well as during the event.  Please let Lauren Langley, 4-H Agent know if you are interested in attending, there may be scholarships available!  The deadline to register is April 23, 2012!

Arbor Day Fun!

This past Saturday (March 17), Arbor Day was celebrated in Burgaw, NC.  Pender County 4-H was asked to be a part of the free tree seedling giveaway.  We had 15 youth and 6 parents volunteering their time to hand out seedlings to the public during the event.  In total, about 400 seedlings were given out to the public.  The Master Gardener volunteers were providing education on each of the 4 trees to choose from, so the homeowner could make the best decision for their land.  This was a fun and unique community service opportunity and 4-H is always ready to lend a helping hand!

The 4 tree seedling varieties given away were Redbud, River Birch, Bald Cypress, and Willow Oak.  The 4-H youth and parents separated each seedling, wrapped it in newspaper, soaked it in water, and placed it in a plastic bag ready to be planted in it’s new home!  Below are some photos of the 4-H’ers hard at work and some at play 🙂
